Cooking with propane vs. butane vs. natural gas:
Propane, butane, and natural gas are the names of some common gases mainly used for refrigeration, heating, automobiles, cooking, etc. Although these three gases might not exhibit noticeable differences, the cooking experience with these three gases may vary. To have a proper idea about the cooking with the mentioned gases, we have to take a look at different aspects of cooking with each of them.
Firstly, propane and butane are known as LPG or Liquefied Petroleum Gas. Both gases have similarities in their chemical structures. As a result, they exhibit many similar properties. They are called LPG because of mainly being stored in tanks or cylinders in liquefied form.
On the other hand, natural gas is mainly composed of methane gas. We will now discuss the energy content, combustion, longevity, and storage facilities of these three gases to have an idea about the cooking experience.
Combustion & Energy Content:
The boiling point of propane, butane, and natural gas are -42°C, -0.4°C, and -161.6°C. Thus, natural gas is a better option for smoother combustion in cold weather. But between propane and butane, propane takes less time to heat up.
Now, if we take a look at the BTU rating of three gases, propane has higher BTU than butane and natural gas. In terms of longevity of the fuel of the same volume, butane tends to burn 12% more than the same amount of propane.
One disadvantage of butane is that it takes more time to convert from liquid form to gaseous form.
Supply and Storage:
We know that the independent gas suppliers supply natural gas to the houses through the supply lines. There’s no fear of running out in natural gas as per concern in good cooking. No refill or exchange is necessary. So in case of adverse weather or a weak transport system, natural gas is a perfect option. On the other hand, propane and butane gas are carried in cylinders. So regular refill or exchange is necessary.
But since these are portable, you can take these for outdoor parties, barbecue, and grilling. One important factor while using LPG is the longevity of storage. Propane is easier to store for a long time under different weather conditions. Butane is more of fuel in nature. Thus it’s less cooking friendly. Butane is slightly costlier than propane.
However, between natural gas and propane, natural gas is cheaper per unit. But since propane is more efficient in the case of BTU rating, it is more affordable than natural gas.
Therefore, propane can be a good option for your kitchen if you have easier access to the refill or exchange. Butane is nearly similar to propane. But in cold weather, it might get tough to cook with butane. Lastly, natural gas also provides you with satisfactory cooking performance and no extra effort to store and refill.
